What is the main cause of fibroids?

The exact cause of fibroids, also known as uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, is not fully understood. However, several factors are believed to contribute to their development:

  1. Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that stimulate the development of the uterine lining during each menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy, may promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids tend to grow rapidly during pregnancy when hormone levels are high and may shrink after menopause when hormone levels decrease.
  2. Genetics: There is evidence to suggest that fibroids may run in families, indicating a genetic component to their development. Women with a family history of fibroids are at a higher risk of developing them.
  3. Race: Fibroids are more common in women of African descent than in women of other racial groups. Additionally, fibroids in African American women tend to develop at a younger age, grow larger, and cause more severe symptoms.
  4. Other factors: Other factors such as obesity, a diet high in red meat and low in fruits and vegetables, and certain lifestyle factors may also play a role in the development of fibroids, although more research is needed to fully understand their impact.

It’s important to note that while these factors are associated with the development of fibroids, they may not necessarily be the sole cause, and individual cases may vary.
